Meredith Connell (MC) is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains MC’s privacy practices, and our obligations under the Privacy Act 2020 (Privacy Act) in respect of the collection, storage, and use of personal information. What is personal information? 

When you engage with us (including as a client or potential client or employee of one, as a potential employee or contractor, a scholarship applicant or service provider), we may collect personal information about you.

Personal information is any information that identifies or is about an individual. It includes (without limit) your name, date of birth, address, contact information, relevant identity credentials, credit checks and any other information about a private individual. It can include financial or employment information relating to recruitment such as work history, academic record and other relevant records such as practising certificate information, criminal checks and visa information.  It may also include information about your business interests and expertise, your communication preferences and your attendance at any of our functions or events.  It can extend to health, dietary and accessibility requirements (for example, if it’s needed to provide you with our legal services or if you attend an event at MC). These are just some of the examples of information that may be covered.

How we use your personal information? 

We may need to collect your personal information for the following reasons:

  • Contacting you in relation to any enquiries you make;
  • Providing our legal services (including for carrying out conflict checks and client due diligence, verifying your identity, monitoring our relationship with you, and complying with our obligations under the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Act 2009 and other professional and legal obligations);
  • Marketing or business development (including sending you our publications/newsletters and inviting you to seminars and functions);
  • Seeking payment for services;
  • Recruiting staff, or considering applications for awards or scholarships;
  • For our internal purposes, such as staff training and improving our services;
  • For any other purpose authorised by you, or under the Privacy Act or any other law;
  • We may publish images of seminars and other functions held at our offices, and it is possible your image may be shown in our publications (including as part of our online social media).

 

We may also send you newsletters or other information we think you may be interested in. This could include information that markets our people or services. You can unsubscribe at any time. You can do this through the unsubscribe feature at the bottom of these emails. 

Personal information can be collected at any point, whenever needed as we carry out our work.  However, we will only collect information that is relevant to our services or other functions. If you do not provide us with certain personal information, we may not be able to assist you and we will tell you if that’s the case. We will not use or disclose any personal information for any other purpose without your consent unless we are required to do so by law. 

Who do we disclose your information to?

We keep your information private.  However, there may be limited circumstances where we need to disclose your personal information to a third party such as our service providers to perform our services and other tasks for you, or if it’s required or permitted by law. But if we need to do that, we will take steps to protect your information with appropriate safeguards to keep it confidential and secure (including complying with our legal obligations under the Privacy Act to protect any information that needs to be disclosed to an overseas entity).
